Dual Subs for Netflix is a browser extension that shows two subtitle languages
at the same time on Netflix. It has no account, no analytics, no advertising and
no tracking, and it does not sell or share data.
What stays on your device
Your settings (languages, sizes, colours, shortcut behaviour),
saved in the browser's local storage for netflix.com.
The interface language you choose, and — for interface languages
other than English and Spanish — the translated text of the extension's own labels,
saved in the extension's local storage so they are not translated again.
You can erase all of it by removing the extension or with Reset settings
in its panel.
What is sent over the network, and to whom
Netflix. Subtitle files are downloaded from Netflix's own servers,
the same files the Netflix player uses. To find them, the extension reads the subtitle
track list that Netflix's player already receives in the page. No other data is sent
to Netflix by the extension.
Google, only when the remote translation engine is in use.Machine translation is off until you turn it on. Once you do, the
plain text of the subtitle lines around the current playback position is sent to
Google's translation service (translate.googleapis.com), together with
the source and target language codes, so it can be translated. Nothing else is sent:
no account data, no viewing history, no title identifiers, no cookies. As with any
web request, Google receives your IP address.
Google's privacy policy applies to
that service.
In Chrome and Chromium-based browsers, translation runs
on your device with the browser's built-in Translator API, and
the subtitle text does not leave your computer. The browser may download a
language model from Google the first time. The remote engine is only used if
you select it.
In Firefox, which has no on-device translation, the remote
engine is the only one available and comes preselected.
Interface translation. When you pick an interface language other
than English or Spanish, the extension's own interface labels — not any of your
data — are translated once, on your device when possible, otherwise through the same
Google service.
The donation link
The popup contains a link to Buy Me a Coffee. Nothing is sent when the popup is open;
the link only opens that site in a new tab if you click it, and from then on that site's
own privacy policy applies. The extension does not know whether you donated, and donating
unlocks nothing.
